A Key West Citizen reporter has contacted me with one of the strangest stories I’ve heard in some time. Seems said reporter has a subscription to the Miami Herald. Here’s what the she told me:

To my surprise, instead of receiving my Friday paper, I found in the clear plastic wrapper names, addresses and other information about the Key West subscribers of the Miami newspaper, including a map showing subscribers’ locations.

Hmmm, what to do next. I delivered the packet to our VP of circulation. I said I don’t know if you’ll consider this trash or a treasure. His eyes widened as I described and handed him what was delivered to me.

“We have to give it back,” he said. “But I think we’ll study it for a while first.”

Looks like it may be time for the Citizen to do narrowly targeted marketing.
