There is a point in South Florida’s yearly timeline when you know that summer has arrived: You step outside and it hits, an all-consuming tide of moist heat. While you contemplate publicly stripping down to your knickers, you decide instead to sooth your blistered soul with rum drinks and palm tree shade. Why not take it a step further? This weekend is Hukilau, the greatest annual celebration of all things tropical to ever wash up on Florida’s diminishing coastline.

This year’s tikistravaganza runs from tonight through Sunday, and it kicks off at 6 p.m. with “Fine Art Tiki” at the Yankee Clipper Ballroom (1140 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale), an awesome exhibit curated by the folks from Miami’s hippest space, Harold Golen Gallery. Wear your nicest Hawaiian shirt or most couture sarong to this tiki formal affair, so that you look your best as you check out art by Shag, Heather Watts, Miles Thompson, and loads more. At 8 p.m. dart across the street (look both ways!), and party at Bahia Cabana (3001 Harbor Dr., Fort Lauderdale) with guest emcee King Kukulele and special musical acts The Fisherman, Haole Kats, Laramie Dean, and burlesque goddesses Torchy Taboo & Hot Lava! Wash back up at the Yankee Clipper at midnight and be mesmerized by everyone’s favorite sandbar siren, Marina the Mermaid. Buy your weekend in bulk with a Big Kahuna Pass or select your activities individually. Get the whole rundown, buy tickets, and fall in love with summer at www.thehukilau.com.
