The Sunrise City Commission will vote tonight on whether to allow bar owners to obtain late-night permits. The meeting will be held at the Sunrise City Commission Chambers at 6:30 p.m.

Amendment  C12032

is the last item on tonight’s meeting agenda. The agenda has already had an initial go-around on February 14, 2012, with a 4-1 vote in favor of letting bar owners in the city apply for a special permit that would allow them to remain open until 4 a.m. Currently, bars in Sunrise are generally allowed to stay open until 2 a.m.

Local bars see this as a boon to their business, since neighboring Lauderhill allows bars to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. in some cases.

Even if the amendment was passed, bars would have to apply for a special permit to remain open after hours. Several factors would come into consideration, like proximity to a residential neighborhood, bar capacity, and the number of police calls that have been made to the location.

The exact agenda item follows:

Amendment  – C12032 Commission discussion and/or action re: First Reading of an Ordinance of

the City of Sunrise, Florida, amending Chapter 3, “Alcoholic
