I’ve been a fan of Orion since I first heard him spit on the Elastic Bond album. Then I had a chance to hear his debut CD, Esperanza, and I was floored. Here he is, producing and rapping along with Smoke and Miras, Sci-22, and Brown I on a video created by Irene Shemony. This is Miami hip-hop. While I normally stake out the rock ‘n’ roll and jazz beats, there’s plenty here that I enjoy. There’s an ominous, Dr. Octagon/Kool Keith thing going on that is rewarding in its intellect and respect to the listener, and the video works in a weird Cab Calloway/Betty Boop/Koko the Clown “St. James Infirmary Blues” kind of way that is equal parts nostalgia and warning. New Orion album, Hunting Season, coming out soon. Watch below.
