Ladies, we still consider ourselves proud feminists, right? When talking shop on matters of childcare, housework, and paycheck inequities, our biting critiques would make Simone de Beauvoir smile. So why is it that, even with all of the gender studies under our collective garter belts, we still feel the tight gravitational pull toward any nightlife outing offering a duo of femme-friendly cocktail and spa treatment? I mean, they only reinforce the Carrie Bradshawish stereotypes about “the fairer sex.” Let’s discuss this further, say perhaps over a drink, as the Friends of the Museum of Discovery and Science hosts “Boys ‘n Their Toys and Pearls for the Girls” at — where else? — the Museum of Discovery and Science (401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale) on Thursday. Women will be treated to Pearl Drop martinis, a fashion show, skin care demonstrations, and shopping for handbags and jewelry. For the gents, there will be a hockey station, shoeshine treatments, chair massages from Mankind, the latest gadgets from Brookstone, small plane tests at an aviation station, and rides from Mercedes-Benz. Festivities start at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Call 954-713-0906, or visit blacktie-southflorida.com. Tickets cost $50.

Thu., June 10, 6 p.m., 2010
