There’s only one way to order the famous, 100 percent, all-beef hot dog at Vic & Irv’s Hots & Burgers (900 S. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale; 954-462-7255). That’s with “the works,” of course: mustard, onions, and “Vic’s signature meat sauce.” Sound a little hard on your digestive tract? Try the combination on a “white” hot dog, which the folks here say is preservative-free, and wash it down with a soothing vanilla milkshake. Then you might not immediately need the antacid. Or opt for some of the other offerings, such as the grilled salami-and-cheese sandwich for a mere $3.99 or the complete Friday fish fry, which includes haddock, fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, and a soda for $8.99. None of which is really healthier for you, but what the hell? This is a place where Vic’s special number 3 comes with a hamburger, hot dog, fries, onion rings, cole slaw, and a soda. Now, that’s what I call the works.
