Whether it was going to court to face the beef industry in the late ’90s, dedicating episodes of her talk show to behind-the-scenes looks at factory farms, or taking viewers on a grocery-store run for dairy-free junk food with Alicia Silverstone, Oprah Winfrey has long been an unlikely ally of the vegan movement. (Unlikely only because Winfrey still eats meat and falls off the vegetable cart occasionally with random fan giveaways like the great KFC free chicken debacle of 2009.)
But the veggie blogosphere lit up this week again with Oprah praises when it was announced that she was challenging her 378 staff members to go vegan with her for an entire week. More on this after the jump…

The Oprah Winfrey Show aired the challenge this week as part of an episode that looks into a plant-based diet inspired by New York Times bestselling author Kathy Freston’s new book, Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change the World
Special guests included Freston and The Omnivore’s Dilemma author Michael Pollan. Lisa Ling also took viewers on a tour of a meat processing plant. Get all the details and see video clips here.
