Forget the fact that we reside at sea level and the beat of our streets has more to do with bongos than banjos. While the Yonder Mountain String Band‘s down-home sound may seem out of step with our urban environs, there’s a definite exhilaration that results when this Colorado quartet fires up their fiddles. Although often branded as bluegrass — their recent live album Mountain Tracks: Vol. 3 debuted at number two on Billboard’s Bluegrass chart — the better description might be “jamgrass” in deference to a populist approach that finds them tampering with the traditional. Or “newgrass” in the way they emulate the progressive posture of bands like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Nickel Creek, and tend to cover songs by the Beatles, Zappa, and Ozzy Osbourne along with more conventional fare. So get down to the hoedown with the band’s “kinfolk” (as they dub their faithful followers), and get a whiff of that Yonder Mountain high.

Yonder Mountain String Band performs with the Del McCoury Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 10, at the Carefree Theatre, 2000 S. Dixie Hwy., West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $23.50. Call 561-966-3309.
