Expert interviewer Christine Borges had a fascinating conversation with Cobra Starship guitarist Ryland Blackington recently for our print edition. The intended purpose was to get everybody excited for the band’s show with 3OH!3 and Gym Class Heroes’ frontman Travie McCoy tonight at Pompano Beach Amphitheatre — but it turned out to provide so much more. Turns out they’re not even a rock band!
What bands would you say have been your biggest influences? I’m
guessing Fall Out Boy is one of them.No way [laughs]. I mean, they’re great guys — don’t get me
wrong — but they’re not a musical influence. I think we listen to a lot
of New York bands and French bands too. When we first started, we were
really into Phoenix, Chromeo — they’re Canadian, but French-Canadian — Daft Punk,
and we like Holy Ghost, Ratatat,
stuff like that. We don’t have a lot of rock influences. We all just
kind of come from that background, I guess, technically. But we’re not
really a rock band.
Regardless of what they call themselves — these genres are all French to us anyhow — all three of tonight’s acts have a goofy sense of humor stuffed inside some pop-forward songs.
