Maverick (noun): An independent individual who does not go along with a group or party.
Cavalier (noun): A gentleman trained in arms and horsemanship.
Hubris (noun): Exaggerated pride or self-confidence, e.g. LeBron James.
Not to belabor the point, but last night’s loss for the Heat proved one more thing. South Floridians learned what it feels like
to be Clevelanders. To climb to the brink of victory, full of pride and
hope and impossible yearnings, only to have glory snatched away at
the last minute. LeBron James brought such heartbreaking disappointment
to his hometown for years. Then he jetted off to Miami to win a championship
and played the same sad song again.
Having moved from Cleveland to South Florida, I’ve wavered — quite
publicly — in my allegiance to the Cavaliers and the Heat. But last
night, there was no question. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade have displayed
such arrogance and ridiculous theatrics in the last few games, they got
exactly what they deserved. Most of the country cheered as they lost. Meanwhile, Dirk Nowitzki — the real hero of the night — walked quietly off
the court before the game ended. How’s that for humility?
