For the third straight year, Sen. Nan Rich of Sunrise has lost her bid to make sex with animals illegal in Florida. The bill died Friday in the Florida House, leaving Rich and her Senate staff thoroughly bewildered.

“For whatever reason, the House decided not to take it up,” says an aide in Rich’s office. “They may have had concerns about the kind of debate the bill generates.”

Or maybe some of those legislators did their due diligence, Googling their way to my New Times feature article from last August in which zoophiles made their case for being a sexual orientation that deserved protection from discrimination.

Indeed, there’s reason to think the Republican-dominated Legislature has an appetite for the risque.
